The Darkness
Bienvenu Steinberg & CBienvenu Steinberg & C is pleased to present The Darkness, a Viewing Room installation of photographs by Mexican artist Cynthia Serur. The works included are built through the overexposure of whites, which, once revealed serve as large windows that unveil fragments, shadows, textures, and tonal variations. Cynthia Serur describes her work as “Ecstatic and contradictory flow that sweeps the weight and absorbs the salt, the sky being a witness of their fertile caresses. Revelation that is not light. Only from the catacombs will the weight be lifted and become breath.” (Cynthia Serur 2025). The photographs capture the subtle transformations of life and nature through abstraction, transforming landscapes into luminous compositions where light, shadow, and texture reveal both the intimate and the sublime. Born in Mexico City in 1972, Cynthia Serur holds a BA in Graphic Design from Universidad Anáhuac. She has exhibited her work in Espacios at the Centro de Arquitectura y Diseño (2007), Trazos de Tinta y Luz at the Centro Cultural del México Contemporáneo (2008), Exposición Itinerante Mabat Al Israel (2009), at the Instituto Cultural México–Israel (1995 & 2008) and at the Universidad Iberoamericana (1994). Her works are part of the collections of the Museo de Antropología and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City. In 1998, she received the National Award for Graphic Design from Casa Pedro Domecq. Serur is also the founder of the OR-B Foundation, an organization that empowers youth through photography and urban art.
