Alibis

As It Stands is pleased to present Alibis, a solo exhibition of paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Maggie Friedman. Produced over the span of a year, each piece depicts an artwork exhibited in Los Angeles and viewed by the artist. Painted exclusively in Kama Fluorescent Green, what Friedman calls “the color of money” (and reportedly the hardest color to sell), the works are an attempt to refuse the notion of style or branding in an increasingly commoditized climate of consumption. Motivated by an initial act of refusal, these paintings paradoxically serve as a Trojan Horse. At once personal and impersonal, they deny the subjective agency of the artist yet are molded fundamentally by Friedman’s artistic style. Images belonging to Silke Otto-Knapp, Sturtevant, Sean Scully, Neo Rauch and Albert Oehlen become prompts, serving as fodder for a broader reflection of influence and exploration of what constitutes a painting today. What’s so bad about style? At the very least, it’ll hit clearance. Maggie Friedman (b. 1995) lives and works in Los Angeles and received her MFA from Art Center in 2022. Recent exhibitions include the solo exhibition Seven Paintings at Shoot the Lobster, New York (2023) as well as group exhibitions at As It Stands, Los Angeles (2024), Stars Los Angeles (2024, as Paul Manton) and Hannah Hoffman, Los Angeles (2022). She is the designer of S/S '22 Novel Collection and the author of Novel (2022), and is currently writing an art world mystery novel that will be published by Apogee Graphics, Los Angeles in 2025.
