What Colour Is Your Scream
Union PacificGrowing along the margins of well-travelled paths are the unlikely strays of the wayside, foliage surviving despite the odds. They channel a persistence echoed in the long history of women’s voices that refuse to be buried, that rise, insistent, from the margins. Taking these “roadside survivors” home, Apollinaria Broche reimagined the roadsides of Pietrasanta from which they were gathered, and attended to the slow performance of their blooming and fading. Patiently observing this dissolution, these flowers became anthropomorphic portraits of existence. Apollinaria Broche (b. 1996, Moscow, Russia), lives and works in Paris and in Pietrasanta. A graduate of Les Beaux-Arts de Paris, her sculptural practice explores themes of escape and duality, balancing strength and fragility. Drawing inspiration from art history, Broche crafts strange, whimsical landscapes populated by fantastical flowers and shape-shifting mythical beings. She has exhibited at Marianne Boesky Gallery, Hussenot Gallery, Collection Lambert and Zhi Art Museum, and has collaborated with Acne Studios among others.
