Inas Al-soqi
The Gypsy Storyteller
Gitana Rosa Project SpaceGitana Rosa Gallery is pleased to present The Gypsy Storyteller, a solo show of new collage work by collage artist and printmaker Inas Al-soqi. Half Romanian and half Palestinian, Al-soqi’s work draws upon the cultural diversity she encounters on her trips around the world, as well her own diverse background. Utilizing commonplace printed ephemera, from newspapers published in the late 1800s to contemporary magazines of fashion and entertainment, her recent hand-cut collage work plays with the dichotomy between folk and fine art while exploring notions of class, nobility, and unique cultural sensibilities. Utilizing imagery depicting Eastern cultures and colonized and war torn areas, she fashions narratives dealing with past and contemporary political conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, and themes of emigration and identity. Inas Al-soqi earned a degree in fine arts from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University in Boston. She was recently Artist in Residence at the Vincent van Gogh House in Zundert, The Netherlands, which culminated in an exhibition at the museum in January of this year. She has shown her work in galleries across the United States and Europe. Her work is held in various museums and private collections in America, Romania, Italy, Germany, Holland and France. She will begin a residency in Marrakech, Morocco this May.
