Appendix

Tyler Park Presents is pleased to present Appendix, Daniel Ingroff’s second exhibition with the gallery. Ingroff’s paintings, intricately crafted using layers of oil paint, merge subjects from the tangible world with unseen metaphysical forces. The paintings offer a delicate logic that is both familiar and strange, establishing an open narrative space for viewers to connect with and interpret as they wish. The exhibition consists of seven paintings in the primary space and a selection of nine drawings in the window room. The appendix is the supplementary material in the back of a book, and Ingroff’s instinct is to bring the information of the background forward. In Navel (2023), an out-stretched arm holds a branch that bends, creating a portal to a series of concentric tunnels that leads deep into an unknown space. In Sulphur Mountain (2023) a pair of horses walk through an elaborate wooded landscape, seemingly merging and emerging from one another. The subjects of these works are bodies in moments of suspension, figures undergoing a change in their material state. Skin is rendered as marble or bronze, referencing the material language of modernist sculpture. The figures in the paintings push back and forth between being bodies petrified forever, or inanimate objects gaining sentience. Daniel Ingroff is a Los Angeles-based artist who holds an MFA from the University of California, Irvine and a BA from Pitzer College, Claremont. His work has been shown in group exhibitions at venues such as Night Gallery, Los Angeles; Klaus Von Nichtssagend, New York; Richard Telles Fine Art, Los Angeles; 356 S. Mission, Los Angeles; and Hunter Shaw Fine Art, Los Angeles; among others. Recent solo exhibitions include Reservoir at Tyler Park Presents in 2021 and Meniscus at Situations, New York; in 2022.
