7 October – 11 November 2023

Allouche Gallery presents Brain Storm, a solo showing of never before seen works by the internationally-renowned American artist, Michael Reeder. The body of work communicates themes derived from Reeder’s own creative process, with his inspirations, internal conflicts, thought process and the emotions involved in creating being highlighted. This collection of new works comprises works on canvas or linen in addition to his traditional shaped and layered wood works. This exploration of medium has given way to the figures themselves becoming rendered in incredible detail. The depth and structure of his wood works provide a lively physicality, while the flatness of canvas has allowed for the further development of Reeder’s imagery. The introspective quality of the collection allows for a refreshing interpretation of the different elements of Reeder’s creative process- from him battling creative struggles to taking inventory of the different inspirations that give way to his creations. In his showpiece work, “Mental Melee”, opposing figures battle each other as Reeder depicts the internal conflict of indecisive thinking. Mirrored figures kick and grab for each other for dominance in a cloud of thought. Reeder’s recurring and iconic character, who serves as a representation of himself, is ever-present in his new works, while he expands into new imagery. Flowers appear throughout the collection, symbolizing the growth of ideas, and the serenity of completion. They can be found vibrantly blossoming out of a figure’s head in “Manifest Musing,” signifying the budding of ideas from the mind. These flowers appear throughout the collection, invoking a sense of calmness as they carry the sentiment of completion and stillness. There is tranquility in his still lifes that contradicts the energy and sometimes chaos depicted in his creative process. They serve as an exhale, the washing over of the calmness of a work completed. Michael Reeder studied at School of Visual Arts in New York, with his works having shown in domestic and international showings. Reeder's extensive studies in fine art, coupled with his background in graphic design and early exposure to graffiti, culminate in the distinctive style for which he is renowned today. His artwork commands attention through a daring fusion of vibrant colors, striking geometric patterns, and lifelike imagery. His figurative pieces possess a weightiness, saturated with vivid, eye-catching hues, and imagery that reflect a profound exploration of identity and the inexorable nature of human mortality. He has been featured prominently in esteemed printed publications such as New American Paintings, Le Petit Voyeur, and HiFructose Magazine.
