The Things We Carry
Société OffsiteTrisha Baga, Tina Braegger, Petra Cortright, Conny Maier, Kaspar Müller, Bunny Rogers, Lu Yang Société is pleased to present The Things We Carry, an offsite group exhibition in Seoul. The Things We Carry pushes back against what science fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin calls “time’s killing arrow,” presenting works that eschew linear narrative in favor of elliptical, layered modes of storytelling. The carrier bag theory of evolution proposes that humanity’s first tools were not spears, but containers: vehicles for preservation rather than destruction. In her canonical essay “The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction,” Le Guin maps this theory onto narrative, asking what kind of stories we might tell if we forgo heroes and instead focus on the things we carry with us.
