This Most Distant: Hunter MFA Thesis Exhibition

Through the mediums of painting, sculpture, and installation, This Most Distant presents the viewer with the deepest questions of existence–time and place, perception, memory, history, desire, mortality, and diaspora. The exhibition reflects the world of experience, doubling it. In Water and Dreams Gaston Bachelard describes standing at the water’s edge of Poe’s poetry. Reflected in the water are trees, stars, the sky: a universe of life unknowable to itself outside of the mirrored pond. Below its surface lie bottomless dreams and the unknown. The surface of the water contains both of these conditions, holding them, displaying them. The question is whether life can be known and described without the surface of the water. What is knowable unless the depths of the imagination and a reflection of the living world are held together? This Most Distant is a realm of this type. Fleeting. Ephemeral. It is the photograph that remembers a forgotten home. It is a forgotten myth that continues to build a world. It is the promise of unfulfilled desire touched only through the glass of a digital screen. It is the phantom tactility of a bodily memory, or the memory of an aroma. It is the afterimage of a pattern transcribed unfaithfully by the mind’s eye.
