Phil GalleryThe great desire to look (at these paintings) comes from the final abandonment of “despair”, which is and always as been solely rhetorical in any case. For all practical and ideological purposes, I have lost my gloominess. Thesis? Antithesis? Synthesis? It seems much too easy for me. There are only oppositions, irreconcilable oppositions. Therefore no “doomed future,” no “end of the world” … Finally living like the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, taking no thought for tomorrow, I enjoy a bit of life and liberty… So my attitude toward reality is hedonistic, yes; and in fact, the narration is ontological; we paint pictures for the joy of it, or look for the joy of looking. What is being painted and looked at? Something that no longer exists: people, feeling, things. On view by appointment through May 13th
