Jason HaamJason Haam is pleased to present Feelings, a solo exhibition by renowned Swiss artist Urs Fischer. This large-scale solo exhibition spans the past 15 years of Fischer’s career. Urs Fischer, known for his comprehensive and bold multimedia work that encompasses sculpture, photography, painting, and installation, is undoubtedly one of the most influential contemporary artists today. “Feelings” gathers Fischer’s representative sculptures and paintings from 2009 to 2023, showcasing a variety of works he has exhibited at prominent museums and galleries around the world. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to witness a wide range of Fischer’s artistic exploration, offering an in-depth understanding of his distinctive creative world. The works presented in this exhibition have been recognized for their artistic achievements in major venues worldwide, including the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva (2016), MOCA in Los Angeles (2013), Palazzo Grassi in Venice (2012), Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna (2012), and the New Museum in New York (2009). Unusually for a gallery, this exhibition takes on the character of a retrospective, not only featuring Fischer’s new works but also encompassing a large portion of his career. It provides a comprehensive overview of his artistic journey, allowing for a linear understanding of his development. In particular, this exhibition will feature new works from his trademark series, “Problem Paintings” (2010–). In this series, Fischer obscures the faces of individuals in typical portraits or photographs with items such as bacon and knot, prompting viewers to question about the interpretations of the images. Throughout the exhibition, Fischer places everyday and familiar objects in surreal contexts or collages them in dissonant ways, leading viewers away from logical and definitive interpretations and toward a focus on pure sensation and intuition. His work offers visual discomfort while simultaneously opening up possibilities for new interpretations, challenging preconceived notions about the objects and images we encounter daily. Through this process, viewers are invited to discover the unfamiliar aspects hidden within the familiar, leading to new visual experiences and emotional responses through art. This exhibition is also significant as the first to be held in Jason Haam Gallery’s expanded space, where the entire 350-4 Seongbuk-dong property is transformed into a monumental installation work by the artist. As Fischer puts it, “The space is emancipated to exist only to host artworks as opposed to traditional white cube spaces, which eradicate history in order to make room for artworks. This context anchors the works in the physical world because the space and artworks symbiotically exist; the space does not hide itself.” Urs Fischer was born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1973, and studied photography at the Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He has held solo exhibitions at major museums worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the New Museum in New York, and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. His works have fetched seven-figure sums at auction and are held in the collections of institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Pinault Collections in Paris.
