Joanna van Son (b. 2000, Oman; lives and works in London) presents six new paintings that expand her ongoing investigation into the spatial and emotional dimensions of the human body. In these works, van Son distorts familiar forms and draws close attention to the shifting textures and sensitivities of skin, revealing a practice grounded in both physicality and introspection. Throughout December, Joanna will be in residence at the Rubell Museum, developing new work within the museum's renowned Artist-in-Residence Program. Rooted in a deeply tactile process that embraces both layering and erasure, her practice explores the boundaries of figuration while probing questions of embodiment, memory, and perception. The residency offers van Son the time and space to further evolve this approach, building upon the themes introduced in her Miami presentation. Founded in 2011 and supported by the Knight Foundation, the Rubell Museum's Artist-in-Residence Program has become a vital platform for emerging voices in contemporary art. By offering early-career artists extended studio time, critical support, and a culminating year-long solo presentation, the program reflects the Rubell family's longstanding commitment to fostering innovative artistic practices. Works created during van Son's residency will be acquired into the museum's collection, joining an expansive archive of more than 7,700 contemporary artworks.
