New Paintings

Bill Brady

1 December 2019 – 12 January 2020

The gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of paintings by Dutch-American artist Peter Schuyff. Historically, Schuyff was a prominent member of the Neo-Geo movement Short for neo-geometric conceptualism, the term “Neo-Geo” came into use in the early 1980s to describe the work of artists who criticized the mechanization and commercialism of the modern world. A hallmark of Schuyff’s remarkable output since the 1980s has been the interplay of surface pattern and optical geometry. In New Paintings, the light appears artificially beamed onto the canvases from some external source or appears shining from within creating an all-over luminescent surface. The undulating forms are made from a series of irreverent strokes that make up a compelling rippling composition. Schuyff uses the language of paint to marry elements of biomorphic shapes, algorithmic repetition, all-over flatness and tightly rendered drop shadows. Peter Schuyff b. 1958 (Baarn, NL) is a painter, sculptor and musician. He showed his work at Pat Hearn Gallery (1983), Gagosian Gallery (1985) and Leo Castelli Gallery (1987). In 2017 a Survey of work made between 1981 - 89 was shown at Le Consortium, Dijon. Other more recent shows include the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2005), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2011), the Whitney Biennial, New York (2014), Sorry We’re Closed, Brussels (2014), Fri Art, Fribourg (2017), HE.RO Gallery, Amsterdam (2018) and Carl Kostyal, London (2018).
