Night Signal
White CubeThe first exhibition in the UK by artist WangShui (b. 1986, USA) opens at White Cube Bermondsey this February, featuring a selection of paintings that investigate the evolving relationship between consciousness and technology. In recent years, WangShui has developed a distinctive approach to painting, through which they explore how significant technological advancements may transform human perception, using painting as a way of tracking these changes through embodied gesture. In Night Signal, a new series of paintings turns this investigation towards the realm of dreams. Drawing on neuroscience, Indigenous knowledge, and artificial intelligence, WangShui treats the dream not simply as an expression of the mind, but as a window into alternate dimensions of consciousness – places where images are not seen but sensed, not known but felt. ‘Inside the White Cube' is a series of exhibitions showcasing work by non-represented artists at the forefront of global developments in contemporary art who have not previously exhibited with the gallery. Launched in 2011 at White Cube Bermondsey in London, the programme has since expanded to the gallery's other locations. WangShui (b. 1986, USA) currently lives and works in New York. WangShui received a BA in Art Practice and Social Anthropology from UC Berkeley, California and an MFA in Film and Video from Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. In 2025 they were one of the inaugural recipients of the Bangkok Collaborate Kyoto Fellowship, launched by Bangkok Kunsthalle, Thailand and Art Collaboration Kyoto, Japan.
