The Nap

As It Stands is pleased to present The Nap, the debut American exhibition of Slovakian painter Rastislav Podhorský. Podhorský’s paintings stage figures suspended between action and its withdrawal. Neither fully idle nor fully absorbed, his subjects occupy a threshold condition, committed to gestures so slight they verge on disappearance. A hand shifts, a body leans, a bell sounds, movements that register as both incidental and totalizing. These are not narratives so much as attenuated situations, reduced compositions in which figures appear to exist only for the duration of their own attention. Working across parallel series that develop in proximity to one another, Podhorský treats motifs as mutable structures rather than fixed signs. A form established in one context is liable to reappear elsewhere, altered or partially dissolved: the act of shaving becomes a palm frond; the reverberation of a bell registers as both sound and filament, nearly indistinguishable from strands of hair suspended in air. These slippages are not simply associative, but structural, rooted in a sustained attention to the most elementary conditions of drawing. The beard hair, the palm leaf, the arc of a bell each reduce to a problem of line and curvature, from which figures and situations begin to emerge, only later cohering into narrative. Images are not constructed through interference so much as through accumulation, each element carrying the residue of prior states while remaining open to further transformation. This dreamlike logic extends to the conditions of making. Podhorský describes his process as maximally open until its final moments, even as the paintings insist on a contrary sense of resolution. What emerges is less a contradiction than a negotiation between contingency and control, improvisation and structure, where the final image arrives as both discovered and decided. Within this painterly universe, minor gestures assume disproportionate weight. The slightest movement, a finger bending, a shift in posture, registers with the intensity of an event not unlike tectonic drift or the subtle recalibration of celestial bodies. It is, as Podhorský suggests, just enough for a day. Rastislav Podhorský (b. 1990, Czechoslovakia) lives and works in Bratislava, Slovakia. He teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, where he leads the Delta painting studio. His book The Ferryman: On Figures in Art and People in Non-Art was published in 2017, and in 2021 he completed his Artist Doctorate with the dissertation The Contradictor: The Frameworks and Latent Possibilities of Visual Art. He is a recipient of the VÚB Painting Award for Young Artists and a laureate of the Novum Foundation.
