The show spans a century of artists obsessed with the city--not just the skyline, but the hum of the streets, the geometry of the fire escapes, the poetry of pigeons, the solitude in a crowd. This isn't some sleepy historical stroll. It's a cross-generational chorus, a clamor of styles and sensibilities--etchings, oil paintings, serigraphs, pastels--all elbowing each other for space on the walls, just like New Yorkers on the subway. These artists--John Baeder's nostalgia, Danielle DeJesus's electric realism, Richard Haas's vertiginous architectural feats, Joseph Peller's vivid street scenes, and Doug Safranek's precise renderings in egg tempera, to name just a few--don't just depict the city. They live it. Some through linework as fine as scaffolding, others through color that screams across the canvas like a siren in the night. This is the city as muse, menace, and mirror.
